Waiting For Santa

It’s Christmas Eve at Grandmother’s house. Time to open gifts.

Shreds of paper and ribbon fly through the air and collect in piles on the floor.

Smiles and laughter all around. The kind that makes you feel warm inside. The kind that makes you smile when you think about it.

Grandmother sits in her chair. A small lady, covered with stacks of gifts and paper and ribbon. Having her family with her is all she needs for Christmas.

Everyone is in awe of the new wooden console television set in the corner of the living room. A color television for Christmas! It was the most beautiful picture you’d ever see! It would be hard to go back to the black and white television at home after seeing this.

A breaking news bulletin flashes across the colorful television screen.

“Santa was just spotted in the sky across the northern part of the United States,” stated the newscaster. “He’s delivered toys to good boys and girls in Canada and is on his way here!”

“Oh my goodness! He’s already covered some of the other countries and he’s on his way here!” I said with excitement! “We’ve got to hurry and get home! I need to get in bed and go to sleep!”

We rushed to pick up all the shredded gift wrap and headed home to snuggle under the covers. Sleep finally overtakes the excitement of Santa’s anticipated arrival.

Wonderful sleep.

To pass the night away as fast as possible.

To be up at daybreak to see what Santa left.

I still remember that excited child.

From the mind of me.
